INDUSTRIAL ENERGY SAVING: 4 ways to save on your COMPANY’S ENERGY EXPENDITURE using incentives

  • Is your company’s energy expenditure skyrocketing?
  • Is your heating or refrigeration system outdated and penalizing the efficiency of the entire production process?
  • Are you doing a plant efficiency or upgrade?
  • Don’t know if bonuses or benefits are available for your type of business?

If you too find yourself in one of these situations stop and read this article so you don’t risk missing out on important INDUSTRIAL ENERGY SAVING opportunities!

So many entrepreneurs carry out modernization and efficiency upgrades without knowing that they could get economic incentives!

In fact, it is possible to obtain different types of incentives, but many entrepreneurs do not know about this opportunity or are unable to apply for it so they miss this opportunity.

Do you want to really start saving on your business’ energy expenditure?

Do you know what incentives are available to you and how to get them?

Let’s look together at the main incentives you could take advantage of to achieve real energy savings in your business.

1 – ENERGY EFFICIENCY CERTIFICATES

This is a real incentive to push companies to do energy efficiency. Energy Efficiency Certificates are, to date, the main incentive mechanism in Italy.

In 2015, 62 percent of the bonds were issued in the industrial sector, confirming the importance of these incentives for companies’ energy conservation.

What is it all about?

One TEE corresponds to primary energy savings equal to one TOE (ton of oil equivalent). So a business can get 1 TEE for every 5,300 kWh of electricity or 1,200 Sm3of gas savings.

How is it achieved?

Contributing to the titles are those interventions that result in efficiencies Higher than legally mandated standards or practices already in the marketplace.

So if your company is found to be more EFFICIENT than market standards, you can apply for the bonds.

How much is the incentive?

Each bond is then sold on a special marketplace at a value now exceeding €100/TEE. Depending on the efficiency upgrade you have done, the incentive can range from a few thousand to over €100,000/year for 5 years!

2 – ENERGY BONUS

In this case, no efficiency upgrades or special investments are required.

What is it all about?

This is a subsidy that involves a decrease in some charges in the electricity bill.

How is it achieved?

Electricity-intensive manufacturing enterprises that have certain characteristics ( read our FAQ to learn more) can join a special registry and thus obtain the facilities.

How much are the savings?

The amount of the subsidy depends on the electricity consumption and other characteristics of the company. To give you an example: a company of our client that consumes about 30 GWh/year was eligible for a subsidy of 223,000.

3 – DEFISCALIZATION

Another benefit that is sometimes not known to companies is tax-deferral.

What is it all about?

Electricity or gas used directly in certain industrial processes (e.g., smelting, metal production, glass or ceramic processing, chemical treatments etc.) are not subject to excise duty. It means that you do NOT pay some charges normally expected for the consumption of energy products.

How is it achieved?

In order to obtain defiscalization , it is necessary to set up a file with the relevant Finance Technical Office.

Depending on the type of energy carrier used (electricity or gas) and the portion of consumption that is tax-deferrable, there are different ways to apply for and obtain tax relief. In some cases it is enough to make a special communication to your supplier (the company that bills you), in others targeted inspections and installation of dedicated meters are required.

How much is the incentive?

Again, energy savings depend on consumption and must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis: to give you an example, one of our clients involved in metal stamping can defiscalize 70 percent of its electricity consumption, with an economic benefit of about €25,000/year.

4 – ENERGY DIAGNOSIS

The last incentive I am telling you about is reserved for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), that is, those companies with fewer than 250 employees and less than €50 million/year in sales (or less than €43 million/year in balance sheet).

What is it all about?

The Industrial Energy Diagnosis (or energy audit) is an in-depth technical analysis of the company’s reality and production processes from the point of view of energy efficiency. Regional calls are coming out at this time with the aim of partly funding this important service for companies.

How is it achieved?

As of today, the call for businesses in Lombardy and Piedmont has come out, but it will soon come out in other regions as well. To obtain funding, an application must be made through portals provided by the regions.

How much is the incentive?

Funding covers 50 percent of the cost of diagnosis, up to a maximum of €5,000 per establishment.

You may already be eligible without knowing it!

Energika, an Esco certified according to UNI 11352, is able to identify interventions or companies that qualify for an incentive, quantify the industrial energy savings and instruct the necessary paperwork to obtain it.

So to summarize:

  • If you have to carry out a new efficiency intervention and want to know how to reduce the payback time of your investment
  • If you have changed a machine or production line in the past year.
  • If you are already planning an investment and want to know how to maximize your company’s energy savings as well
  • If you want to know whether your process qualifies for a tax break or whether your company is energy
  • If you are an SME and want to understand how to save money on diagnosis
  • If you want to stay up to date on incentives and funding
